Worldwide almost 15 per cent of the population is not connected to the electricity grid, this number climbs up to 25 per cent in rural areas. Many of the connected communities have little or irregular access to electricity. Almost one in four people worldwide cannot simply switch on the light when they come back from work nor use electricity to run their business. Those off grid communities have to rely on toxic, dangerous and expensive fuel sources to light their homes and communities. One of these fuels is kerosene. As you can imagine kerosene is not the most efficient source of energy. In the developing world households spend up to a third of their total income on kerosene alone. But not only is kerosene incredibly expensive, using kerosene as a fuel source means exposure to a number of dangers and hazards. Breathing its fumes can cause organ damage, it can be irritating for eyes and skin and it may cause respiratory irritations. On top of this, kerosene causes house fires.
Even the extremely low investment for switching to solar power (as low as 10 US$) is too expensive for most rural households. Therefore, Photon Energy Foundation is committed closing this gap and helping communities to replace dangerous and expensive energy sources with sustainable, safe and affordable solar power.
